LECTURE 05

ARTICLE READING

  1. What is the role of materiality and immateriality in architecture today?
  2. Is materiality and immateriality predominantly about the expression of material properties, the transformation of materials, human perception, or value judgements; some combination of these; or something else.
  3. In other words, if a forth text were added to this chapter, what would the argument be about today’s architecture in relation to materiality and immateriality?

In olden days, the original concept and idea in design and construction of the building is materiality. Those materials sand timber and stone are basic elements of materiality. As it emphasis on usage of raw material, and focus on the functions rather than the feeling creates by it. It can fully conserve the quality of raw material. In the modernism era, those advanced technology in our environment of architecture, that can be build any different kind of building. Architecture is expected to be solid, stable and reassuring, either physically, socially and psychologically. In my point of view, materiality in architecture is a concept of applied various material or substances in the building. Besides that, it is also not limited to theoretical position on perceived materiality of textures, images of the objects that representing. Materiality have own mass.

Other than that, immateriality in today architecture is playing an important role that can delivery atmospheric feeling or visual sensation to us. Immateriality more sensation. For instance like light, manmade, pattern to create an expressed from the ideas of the role of immateriality as a copulation between modern era and building. The current architecture building is more in massage, sense or idea that the architect want to deliver to the world know immateriality preserve that quality of building, expressing the word-timeless and it also contrive a new method of space planning. There is a very good example in representing of immateriality today which is The Blur Building. It was a temporary media pavilion built for the 2002 Swiss Expo in Yverdon-les-Brains, Switzerland. The building was using atmosphere to create spaces, an emphasis on the affective qualities of the immaterial as sensorial stimulus.

The architect who name Alvar Aalto, who designed the building called Muuratsalo Experimental House (1953). Which located in island Muuratsalo, Finland. Through the process of designing the house, it became an experimental study of materiality, architecture construction and philosophies. The building used more than fifty different types of bricks which are arranged in various patterns. This allowed to test aesthetics of different arrangements while also monitoring how they reacted in the rough climate. The interior of the house holds a raised loft area which was to function as a painting studio. This is supported by large wooden beams which hold the space in tension. Boulders and stones which are covered with moss, bilberry and lingon berry bushes add a beautiful contrast to the brick and white colour of the house. In additional, a feeling of ancient ruins is prevalent with the whitewashed brick walls that rise from the landscape on the hill. Adding to this ancient feel, vines wrap and stretch across the surfaces of the dwelling which reveals its age.

Based on what I understanding, the materiality and immateriality predominantly about the expression of the material properties and the human perception. Even thought the materiality and immateriality are given different types of implication, but they also playing a very important part in architecture, because they have their own function, it can make us easily to feel and read the design intension of the architect.

In a nutshell, for the fourth article that I will discussing about the counterpoise between materiality and immateriality. Today most of the high rise buildings are more in materiality, because they want to create the nice visual and ignore the senses in the same time. Or maybe some of the building too focusing on immateriality. So I hope it can be balance or equilibrium and add in materiality and immateriality in the same time, so that it can explore more in raw materials and user experience.
