During his sharing I can feel his passion where he mention he want to use a private property to put
the floating island by after a long discuss with the owner, he agree the help the owner to build a
wall as an exchange. For each of the island is place he done a lot of studies doe each site for the
best respond form the community and architecture.
Eric inspire us that the range of possibilities in architecture is endless. Form creating an exhibition
galleries, graphic production center, and temporary radio stations to community gardens and
clinics. He said he invite artist and to help set up and these drifting islands have successfully
becoming meeting point.
Eric Chen do mention context is important, but as the floating island keep changing location though
out the year, it is a big challenge for him and his team. Eric and his team intends to develop an
architectural scale that is able to drift and change between the body, the city, and the landscape.
These conjunctions are not trying to connect the city with its memories but to construct a bizarre and
even morbid urban landscape to discuss the tension and vitality of time and materiality. They form an
investigation into the deeply buried energy of its contemporary urban surroundings and inquire the
possibility of an alternative field of art making.
The Urban Floating Island begin with 3 structure that build by themselves, and he mention the design to
let the visitor feel that the ‘island’ will be gone anytime, so it people will appreciate. To support his idea, he design it with with the idea of loss of physical senses when living in an urban environment. By
recalling physicality, and start using architectural element such as ‘window’, ‘roof’ and ‘wall’ are given new meanings when it is to combine with artistic activities in the community and becoming
"Family Story House", "Art Exhibition Hall" and "Photography Time Machine" and others.
He said the Urban Floating Islands respond and intervene with their architectural surroundings to
transform the selected urban gaps into villages, stages, schools, and theaters. This will become a
connection to network and becoming a gathering point. Although the floating island might be at the
site for just a shot time of period (around one week or more).
Eric Chen is a Taiwanese architect that see architecture in a different perspective. He share about his
thoughts and his one year experience for doing the project “2016 Urban Floating Islands”. The idea is
to attempts from places to places. Eric have the idea of “moving architecture” he mention that he
have a vision to use this floating island be go around Taipei, Taichung and different areas.
