LECTURE 04
ARTICLE READING
What is the role of honesty and deception in architecture today? Is honesty and deception predominantly about the expression of structure, the relationship between interior and exterior, the expression of goals and challenges of the architect; some combination of these; or something else? in other words, if a fourth text were added to this chapter what would the argument be about today's architecture in relation to honesty & deception?
In the architecture, what mean honest or deception? The two main things are the buildings does not cover by its structure and pretend to be something else and secondly is the design of the building is more coherent with the spirit of the modern age.
The honesty. In this modernism era, a lot of architecture buildings are look excellent and outstanding, however can be deceptive when it comes to the functionality. It is not uncommon to see goof people getting brow-beaten into accepting ugly architecture on grounds that the alternative, which is additional to the situation and unabashedly traditional, the deception pastiche. No more than that, the contrast in the current modern architecture is honest and authentic. And in the transitional architecture is nostalgic Disney world. For instance, the building of The Chicago Federal Center, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and completed in 1974, actually consists of three buildings which are arranged around and define the Chicago Federal Plaza. This building come with all vertical beams in the faced, but it mainky just for decoration, not really for supporting the load.
So based on what I said about the honesty early, that the John Ruskin been bring orward with three types of honesty, the first one is the suggestion of a made of structure or sfupport, other than the true one…..and the second one is painting of surfaces to represent some other material than that of which they actually consist….and the third one is the use of cast or machine-made ornaments of any kind. So according to his words, I know that he was trying to support hand craft more than machinery, but due to the technology today, that not a problem to have those material and it only comes with the problem of limitation of the function.

By the way, based on my point of view, I know that honestly in architecture is showing the material and also the function. “Brutalism was an attempt to create an architectural ethic, rather than an aesthetic. It had less to do with materials and more to do with honesty: an uncompromising desire to tell it like it is, architecturally speaking.” By Le Corbusier. Honesty is more focus of form follow function, as personally I like simplicity kind of design like the building that design by Le Corbusier the Villa Savoge. Nowadays architecture more important to design the function for humility, which mean that it must well know what human need and not.

Due to the current technology and also the knowledge of human, they produce and design a lot of unique or iconic building, and I know it will be continue with more further, and some of it totally no design with consideration of human, it just care about the outlook and also the form only.

So personally I prefer honesty architecture, because it really can well showing the functions and also the materials as well, so I hope in future will have more architect try to design more honesty design, “truth to the medium” by John Ruskin.
