What is the role of ornament in architecture today? Is ornament (i.e aesthetic expression) predominantly a technological, cultural, economic, environmental, or artistic task; some combination of these; or something else? In other words, if a fourth text were added to this topic what would the argument be?

What is the role of ornamentation in architecture today? Ornamentation is “Something employed to adom, beautify, or embellish, or that naturally does this; a decoration, embellishment.” Based on my point of view, ornament, in architecture applied decorating in separately one by one of different styles that is an extraordinary characteristic of buildings, furniture, and some household items. Ornamentation often take place on columns, entablatures and the tops of building and around entrance and openings, especially in the form of mouldings. From the beginning to the end, antiquity and into the Renaissance and later for religious buildings, applied ornament was considerable, it regularly having symbolic meaning and also as a language through which architecture communicates with broader public.

First of all, the building Bank of China Tower which located in Hong Kong. This was the tallest building in Hong Kong and Asia from 1990 to 1992. The form of the building while its distinctive look makes it one of Hong Kong’s most identical landmarks today. It was the source of some controversy at one time, as the bank is the only major building in Hong Kong to have bypassed the convention of consulting with feng shui masters on matters of design before the construction. The architect included ornamentation of cultural, he criticised by some practitioners of feng shui for its sharp edges and its negative symbolism by the numerous ‘X’ shapes in its original design. Besides that, the building also added another ornamentation on the building which is illuminating. The architect added LED light in the irregular line of the building edges, then it can bring out the beautiful light during the night time.

Other than that, nowadays most of the architecture buildings forget about the environmental. The main purpose of their design is just for create a unique building with the ornamentation. They forget about the original concept of form follow function. Mostly applied in today architecture buildings are lack of function. Because they abuse their design to create just for a unique and beautiful buildings just for asthenic and iconic building of their building and can attractive to tourist in the same time can also increase the economic in the country and also enhance the status of the country. For example the repetition element like shading device in the façade of the buildings, the originally function of the vertical elements are using for shading from sunlight purpose, but now some of the buildings with vertical elements do not function with that well, they just use the vertical elements for making the building more beautiful and maybe just for site context to match the other building which located nearby.

The architecture building of the Dayabumi Complex in Malaysia, which fully combined the ornamentation and also tradition of background of the country. It’s can greatly representing the culture of the country, Malaysia. Nonetheless, I agree with ornamentation, because in previous time they thought ornamentation is wasting time, energy and money, but in today, the modernism era, we have a lot if high technological, so ornamentation for a building is not a problem and it also can create an attractive building for tourists to increase the economic of the country. For example pearl tower in Shanghai, 101 tower in Taipei or KLCC in Malaysia.
