The current paradigm regarding form and function is not yet clear, nor it is clear how future architectural
philosophies will reshape the form-function dialetic. The hot debate of form and function will never ended.
Why form always have to follow function ? Why function have to follow form ? But rather viewing them as a rival orseparated factor, we should see them both not as opposed, but a balance relationship. I think that form and
function should maintain or evolve together. “Form and function has to be in a whole, building is a whole.”
The House of Vans London sits within the 150 year old brick arches of the railway lines. The site was previously used
by the Old Vic Theatre. The plan for the skatepark was to accommodate three tunnel spaces to allow for varying
layouts and abilities. The main space is the concrete “bowl”redominantly for professional use, the second area is
the “street scene” for medium ability and the third is the “mini ramp”skate park area for beginners or relaxed users. As well as the physical design of the space, the activation of the space was a key requirement to generate an
exciting, vibrant, educational and creative space. “The purpose, function and use (of space or building) have
aesthetic consequences, affecting form of building and lived experiences of individual.”Adaptive reuse is a key
showing that the same space can be designed to serve different function and usage.
We, human, as an intelligent living species on earth, had been building building for centuries until now.
Adaptive reuse is crucial as there are too many old buildings, also reusing an old site or building and giving them anew life helps land conservation. For this semester, our studio class has been assigned with projects related to
adaptive reuse. I’d done few researches, but The House of Vans London by designers Pete Hellicar and
Tim Greatrex was my favorite. The House of Vans London is a new mixed use creative venue for Vans enthusiasts
and those interested in skateboarding culture.
Form and function have been the biggest topic in architecture world no matter which era we are living in. As
architecture grow along with the human evolution, the way we view and think of form and function are different
and debatable in each angle of perspectives. There are no fix formula between the relationship of form and
function, there is no right or wrong in architectural design. Most architecture learners have been stucked and
blindly following the formula of “form follows function” or “ function follows form”, without rethink and reinterpret
the core behind these ideas. “If a building is to follow “form follows function” only can it be done through
plasticity.” The relationship of form and function is forever changing like the world of fashion, because architecture
is all about human, afterall.
What is the relationship between form & function over the lifespan of an architectural work? Meaning how does renovation, adaptive reuse, etc, affect how building are both designed initially and transformed later?
