Sit context is the words that keep me thinking as I listen his sharing, using local materials and studying
the site, putting thoughts for human behavior is what architecture should focus more. Understand
and analyze and celebrate the element using architecture.

Also the challenge is the existing building does not allow much light penetrates in. He open up
skylight and opening allowing nature light.
He even use the site as a story for his design. The site is a mountain area, so he design start from the hill
and rising up to the building.

It is very timely that he share about his project, Lawson Park as we learn about adaptive reuse in our
design studio, is nice to learn from him how to solve the problems. He mention the challenge he face
when designing the Lawson Park is there is restriction since it used to be a traditional farm. Since this
building is to renovate it to provide residential accommodation and some research facilities for artists,
he design a social strength in the middle and open space for the user.
Expose. The glass box is a shelter that allowing the sunlight to penetrate into the site and also to have a good view for experiencing ‘no limit’ connect to the environment.

In his design we know how important site context for his design, using weather, sunlight, and site
materials to create a shelter that express what the site really is.

Contrast. The bridge is a big contrast in the building, a solid black bridge. It protected from the
weather, closed to the sky and the horizon. As he mention the importance of a building being a shelter.

Reflect. as the season that constantly change through out the year, he design using white solid walls, it allow the light and the sky reflect to the wall. The user get to experience as the season changes. He also that open to the sky feel connect the the sky and for a better experience.
The project that he share that capture me the most is An Turas which is located in the west coast of
Scotland which is near to the pier. The design intention is to making a structure for the island of Tiree
which is acting as a ‘shelter’ whilst waiting for the ferry. The site contain astonishing view of a seaside,
high winds and vibrant light. But how to celebrate the site?

Charlie describe Scotland is a ‘’city of imagination’’ that have an extraordinary relationship with the
environment. As we see the projects that he done, truly it had inspired him to blending architecture
relationship with the environment, and he understand the site very well to use in on his design.

During the presentation Charlie Sutherland explain how he think about ‘’between definite and infinite’’. From my understanding he express that architecture is not fixed or a formula but a limitless
imagination to allow the architect transforming imagination thoughts to become reality. For him site context is very important as we can hear him sharing about the each of the building site, which show
that site and environment means so much to a building.

For our second PAM talk we have the privilege to get inspired by and Scottish architect, Charlie
Sutherland. He first start off with introducing his very first project that done by Sutherland Hussey Harris
Architects, they done a few small scale projects begin in Scotland ( which is Charlie Sutherland’s
hometown and theirs company base in) they expand theirs project to the UK which got them 7 RIBA
award winning projects. After that, they also developed many larger scale overseas projects.
