LECTURE 02

Select a recent design project on which you are working. Discuss the characteristic of the project in
regards to simplicity and complexity, in light of the discussion and text introduced today. What
attitudes regarding simplicity and complexity does your work illustrate?

For my year 1 semester 2 design, we split into 6 person a group do design a small village. And each of our character have a specific occupation and hobby, and most importantly 6 of us have the fear of enclosed space - claustrophobic. My client is a doctor and her hobby is reading (we choose it randomly) there is a consideration of the environment and the relationship with the neighbors.

My design is is more on simplicity, I am an admirer of simplicity and minimalism but with the requirement and the client claustrophobic matter there is some complexity thinking on the design. The main focus on design consideration is on the fear on enclosed space since it is the main priority for this semester.

I like how Vittorio Gregott think about simplicity ‘’ to me simplicity is not simplification, and above all not simplification as a formal model. Eloquent simplicity can be reached through great effort, but it is never a good starting point, nor above all, an objective at any cost. Architecture is not simple; it can only become simple. ’’

For my design the most important thing is the open space for the claustrophobic client to overcome her fear. With a stressful job as a doctor, it is important to have a place for relax. I want to create a space that is able to have a good view and a big open space to even letting her to read (her hobby) so I created a rooftop that is able to walk up, that will be a place for her to relax without any distraction. To archive that, the biggest challenge is the roof height, is the high enough for the interior and the roof steps.

Besides, in this design the focus will be on the space rather that any decor. With the mindset of ‘’Less is more “ , the house is functional, clean and simple. Design is more on the simplicity and sense of minimalism but with personal style on it. For the floor plan and interior I make it to be straightforward, efficient plan layout. Simple forms, and a open floor plans with the consideration of the circulation of the plan. Since I design the house very open and expose and enable views and daylight enter the house and decrease the claustrophobic. There is also no complicate openings and windows.

For the interior spaces, we have limit dimension. Design the the sitars for multipurpose use, for walking up for bedroom and using the stairs as a book shelf with a place to sit for he to read. As a doctor it is important to have a goof relationship to neighbors, for our site in the center we create a park for the small village, the facade of the house is very welcome and allow the people walk over to the roof or to enter the house.

Although simplicity design look very simple, it wasn't that easy. It require complex thinking and solving problems. To design for a claustrophobic suitable using simplicity design too. ‘’ The reason behind a simple building must reveal, not cover, the fissures of doubt; they must reconnect and not isolate.’’ - Vittorio Gregotti.
