LECTURE 06

Form and function in other word that phrase by Frank Lloyd Wright “form and function are one.” Form and function are basically inseparable, they are inter-related and always work side by side. Function always affects the expression of a form.

Function, is the principle that architects should design a building based on the purpose of that building. A building or a space is well said as based on the purpose of it , none of the space is being ignored or wasted in use , is a matter of confusion and controversy within the profession, particularly in regard to modern architecture.

Nowadays, A significant number of programs, projects and products are delivered by function alone. Function in building is roughly equivalent to requirements or user stories in technology driven business initiatives.Function means building upon analysis and principles and realistically explore ideas for how the design, materials and systems can best serve needs and environment. From large-scale plan design, to the smallest detail sketches,  strive to create the most efficient solution for needs.

Form is the shape  or configuration of a building.  The reciprocal relationship isessential, given the intention of architecture to provide internal sheltered space for human occupation. In fact, the importance of form is one of the most contentiously debated subjects in contemporary architectural discourse. Form is playing a very important role, because nowadays building is seeking iconic and unique, so form can be readily understood at a visceral level. Value is based on the elements that most human can 'feel' if not conceptualized.

Based on my personal point of view, every building design have their own purpose, form is important but in the same time you also need to take care of function. If a building designed only with the purpose of achieving maximum function, it will be only a set of functional space with no aesthetic value. But if architect design with only considering form, the outcome can only considered as art not architecture. Architecture has always been the result of the delicate balance between art and science…

I think that both form and function are bonded and inseparablely linked as Frank Lloyd Wright once said "form and function are one". Whatever building designed  should be the consequence of a certain function, of a certain problem you want to solve. It means designing with a purpose, not being driven by stylistic concerns. This is what for many, makes Design. Art on the other hand is being driven by stylistic concerns. For example: Good design is aesthetic.

Burj Al Arab designed by Tom Wright is one of the most recognizable building for contemporary building that do consider both function and form. According to Wright’s design, the building id built in triangle form to reduce the fiction of wind and the building itself. the building is located at seaside so it has to be strong enough to withstand the strong wind from ocean.

Blur Building

The blur building , Its form is nothing without the presence of the fog , in this case , functions and form are related and change together in different condition. Fog creates the form which indicates the functions space. This can be said so as the new materials ! invention of steel and glass , changes the old , using of new technologies and materials , (fog) creates the space and its function , different functions are invented within a form space .

In a nutshell, it is the duty of an architect to design a structure in a way that it is both functional, durable and trendy. Compromises have to be made, but an architect should never indulge himself in creating extravagant forms which might be aesthetically beautiful but which do not serve their functional purpose.  Thus, to conclude with this argument, architects should strike a balance between form and function, so to optimize aesthetic, economics, experience and usability of any architecture and design.
