LECTURE 13

ARTICLE READING

Based on your current design project on which you are working on. Discuss the characteristics of the project in regards of it having a “phenomenology of place”. How does your work illustrate a sense of being “place-based” or does it focus on “placelessness”.

What is phenomenology? Based on my understanding, it can defined in architecture refers to the experience through sensory properties in reference to building materials. It is unique responsibility in this designing experience by implementing sensory design I order to establish experiential, architectural space, more it more than just a site context. Other interpret of phenomenology in architecture from Norburg-Shulz in the text Genius loci : Toward a phenomenology of architecture, phenomenology in architecture is the manipulation of space, material, light and shadow.it aids to create a memorable encounter through an impact on the human senses, and to promotes the integration of sensory perception as a function of a built form. This creates an experience that is beyond tangible, but rather abstract, observed and perceived.

In this semester, we are very lucky got that chance to explore the concept of adaptive reuse. What is adaptive reuse, it mean give a new soul to the old building, for example adding a ew spaces or functions to the building. But in the same time, we need to remain the origin of the old building and also the historical value of the old building. We went to the Audi Homestay which located in Pulau Balik, Penang. And we were given a task which is adptive reuse the entire Audi Homestay old building to become an “Artist Village”. To provide a space of the artist work, sleep, and exhibit their work and allow visitor to come. The Audi Homestay is a place that full of nature, it like 360’ of the site also full with green. Besides that, the homestay major timber construction, so that it can provide a feeling of kampong. Moreover, homestay got provide a bicycle rent, it allow people to explore more to the site by using our legs because it is want to suit the natural of the surroundings, mean without pollution.

My project applies the concept of bring the natural condition into the building and remaing the structures of the building. Because I want to remain the original material of the site and give a same language to the surrounding site. When you walk begin walking into my building, you will have 2 row of trees blocking you and create a visible invisible feeling, and in front will be a open exhibition which is fully bright with the natural light, it give a feeling that the open exhibition like got a sportlight (natural light) there. It we can call it as phenomenon created by surrounding greeneries and plantation. Besides that, in the main space I set it as gathering space, so that the people can have a strong point of interaction to the visitor who viewing the artist work, in that place, I plant with grasses and which a few of tress which above the chairs, which can help for shading the sunlight and also keep the temperature in a better level.

Moreover, I will enhance a few column from the rear side, because the whole roof of the rear part I reuse it as a roof top which can use for open event space or party. And also can provide 360’ view for the entire site. That’s why I must to enhance the rear column to support the roof top. For the artist work space, I provide in the first floor, mean it can with the good view with green and the rural area while doing their work, and it is also semi open space. The artist’s room I also provided that a balcony for them viewing to the site and get inspiration on it.

Lastly, I think that it is not only transformation of the homestay, in the same time, it also adding something new, changing a better quality, and introducing the condition of the site. For me, most importantly is that to respect and distinct to the original building and also the surrounding site context.
