ASSIGNMENT 03
FILM CRITIQUE : ARRIVAL
Question 2: To critically assess the Genre and Background & Setting of the film. Did it successfully convey? And was it suitable? Could you easily understand the setting?
Intense competing, fighting, battling, killing, human to human, human to alien, alien to alien, those thrilling scenes are what left us stunned and excited, but Arrival teaches us that learning the art of communication, can prevent all of those miscommunication and conflicts mentioned above, and still becoming one of the best science fiction movie of the year. At a time when whole nations are failing to communicate with one another, the outer space intelligence came help to promote unity. Arrival reflects more idealistic hopeful key than most movies in this genre, atleast without using bullets in solving the problems that the world encountered.

The background sets in normal present world, focusing mainly in US military base camp in Montana, America, where the egg-like black colored alien spaceship arrived uninvited. A soulful linguist-heroine, Louise Banks is moved into a makeshift military base to help bridge a communication between human being and a bunch of seven-legged alien creatures.

The spaceship opens every 18 hour, welcoming human come in and interact with them, so basically the location focus is on the spaceship and the military base two point, come and back repetitively. Inside the spaceship there’s a gravitational change to 90 degree when reached a certain level, the interior is covered with rough surface in black, at the other end, there’s a big projector-like screen which the alien use to interact with Louise. After they stayed there in a certain period, they go back to the military base to conclude their findings. The base is basically a lot of linked camp with latest technologies, weapons and equipment.
A movie often gives lessons to the audience not from the past nor future, but the present. The background reflects the problem of current society, lack of communication, and we all know it’s hard enough, sometimes, to talk to other human beings, let alone two alien outer space creatures that don’t have mouth to speak our language. The young army who locates a bomb inside the spaceship shows that the society nowadays, especially the younger generations, are highly attached to the social networking world where they get uncertain informations, lost the ability to justify right or wrong and this often lead to bad decision making. After the incident, the military base was asked to move, reflecting the moral value of society, runaway when the outcome is unpredictable or uncertain, and the lack of responsibility after screw up things . The reflection of the real world is well suited and fit in the movie as every setting connects with the plot and storyline outcome.

Superior countries for an example in the film, USA, Russia, China and more, are the world leaders in making big decision, handling huge problems but meanwhile they are also having competition with each other, not wanting to lose, protecting themselves when danger, showing the selfishness in the world today, and this often threaten the peace and unity of the world. Generally, the background and settings shows very clearly sign to understand and helpful for audience to rethink and reflect the situations in the movie to the real world as they are our worldly problems that have not been solved in centuries, and who knows sometimes, the key to peace may be just an easy phone call.
