FILM CRITIQUE  :  ARRIVAL

Question 1:

To compare the story of the movie to ONE of the eight basic stories learnt in class.

 

      Based on the Movie 'Arrival’, in my opinion the story of the movie revolves around or can be linked to the basic story under Orpheus. This concept of story is usually about “the gift that is taken away, the loss of something personal. Either about the tragedy of the loss itself or the search which follows the loss” as explained by others. In this story however, the “loss” isn’t exactly physical, it is a thought, dream, or subconsciously thinking where the protagonist seeks and search, figuring out why she is having visions of a little girl whom she had never met before in her life, yet every time she dreams about her she feels sad.

       During the arrival of the extraterrestrial beings on earth, while Louise is figuring out their language, she gets visions of a little girl that seemed to be really close to her. She wonders why and desperately search for an answer. She believed that the aliens might have something to do with it. As the story goes on, she finally understood that the visions that she was getting we’re actually her future. She got married to Ian, had a daughter named Hannah who will die early from cancer. When one truly understood the ‘universal language’ you will gain the ability to see the future. This was the gift, gifted by the extraterrestial beings to human kind for helping them in a form of weapon 3000 years later on. Louise not only saved the world but she also found a purpose in life.
