ARTICLE READING

What is the relationship between form and function in architecture today? How are new uses, technologies, and materials changing the relationship them? Use contemporary case studies, use quotes from 3 articles to support your point of view. Please reference them properly.

Form and function in other word that phrase by Frank Lloyd Wright “form and function are one.” There have very much of inter-relate between to form and function. Because both of the form and function are always run side by side. Function always affects the expression of a form. For instead, every time before a building build, it must be planned first, every time the architects will try to included these two principles which are form follow function or function follow form to their design. So, what is form in contemporary architecture? Actually form in building architecture is a very last productivity. But of course it also more than that . Form also is the productivity of creates including the “negative space” which fulfills those things. In today architecture, form is playing a very important role, because nowadays building is very iconic and unique, so form can be readily understood at a visceral level. Value is based on the elements that most human can 'feel' if not conceptualized.

Besides that, function in a building design layout is for takes care of human need, interests, sentiment and values of his clients while designing the structures. it design based on the purpose of the building itself. based on my personal point of view of the relationship between form and function, As what i mention from the beginning, the form and function there have a big inter-relate to each other, it cannot to be spread. Both of them always fun side by side. Every building design got their own purpose, form is important but in the same time you also need to take care of function. Because if a building missing other one form or function, then it will be a bad design.

Nevertheless, the new uses, technologies and materials, in my personally view, it will change the relationship between them or maybe it can make the relationship contrary. Technologies change their relationship is the invention and perfection of the high speed elevators make vertical travel, that was once tedious and painful, now easy and comfortable development of steel manufacture has shown the way to safe, rigid, economical construction rising to a great height: continued growth of population in the great cities, consequent congestion of centers and rise in value of ground, stimulate an increase in number of stories: these successfully piled one upon another, react on ground values and so on, by action and reaction, interaction and inter-reaction. Thus has come about that form of lofty construction called the "modern office building".

Due to the technological advanced, those building can be create in different form or unique and iconic form. Because the technologies can help to calculate those different angle and make the impossible become possible. One of the example building that i feel suitable in this form and function is GC Prostho Museum Research Center by the architect Kengo Kuma which located in 2-294 Torri Matsu Machi, Kasugai-shi, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Cidori has a wood 12 mm square as its element, which for this building was transformed into different sizes. Parts are 60mm×60mm×200cm or 60mm×60mm×400cm, and form a grid of 50cm square. This cubic grid also becomes the grid on its own for the showcase in the museum. Jun Sato, structural engineer for the project, conducted a compressive and flexure test to check the strength of this system, and verified that even the device of a toy could be adapted to ‘big’ buildings. This architecture shows the possibility of creating a universe by combining small units like toys with your own hands. We worked on the project in the hope that the era of machine-made architectures would be over, and human beings would build them again by themselves.

Other than that, the Blur Building which built for the Swiss Expo 2002 on lake Neuchatel. It also by using technologies and materials, Upon entering the fog mass, visual and acoustic references are erased, leaving only an optical "white-out" and the "white-noise" of pulsing nozzles. Blur is an anti-spectacle. Contrary to immersive environments that strive for high-definition visual fidelity with ever-greater technical virtuosity, Blur is decidedly low-definition: there is nothing to see but our dependence on vision itself. Different function are invented within a form space.

In the nutshell, no matter "form follow function" or "function follow form", most importantly each of them can stick together and make a balance between both of them, then i think it will be great for our future architecture or it also what the world most related nowadays.
