ASSIGNMENT 03
FILM CRITIQUE : ARRIVAL
Question 5:
To critically assess the Characters Key Development and the relationship to the Three Act. Was the development well explored? Did the story flow well? Where they any issues not addressed by the end of the film?
Dr. Louise Banks is the main character in the movie of “Arrival”. She is linguistics professor in a university. Before she was an interpreter in the international organization. In the beginning of the movie is a depress person. The act one during the set-up, when everyone know about the news of the aliens arrived to the earth, all the humans were very worried and scared, but Dr. Louise Banks was unperturbed. For example, everyone was not going to school, but Dr. Louise Banks was going to school as usual, it proved that, Dr. Louise Banks is a person that not afraid to die, maybe she already feel meaningless to live in this world. Besides, in the second act, the key development of Dr. Louise Banks is a person that able to solve problems wisely. At first, Dr. Louise Banks refuse the communication way given by Weber, because she have a more efficiency way to communicate with aliens. After that she became more responsibility and she started in charged the whole team as a leader and everyone started follow her step. Because everyone know she is the only one can communicate with aliens. The third key development of Dr. Louise Banks is she became brave.
Because she took off hazmat suit inside the spaceship. It was a very dangerous action, because that might have radiation or infection inside the spaceship. The reason why she want to do that because she knew the aliens want to see her face. Dr. Louise Banks facing a lot of pressure and stress, everyone need her to get answer from the aliens why the aliens want to come to the earth. Moreover, the key development of Dr. Louise Banks in third act is she became very desperate to find the answer, because she has a flash back constantly floating a vision of a little girl in her mind. The last key development of Dr. Louise Banks is she finally have a purpose to live. The climax part of the movie with the help of Heptapod technology that lets Dr. louise simultaneously know the present and future, she calls Shang and gets his attention by telling him something she couldn’t possibly know the words before his wife dying.
Lasty, She knows she will get marry with Ian Donnelly and will have a daughter with him. Although she know her daughter will die by cancer in the future, but she still agree to the guy and want a baby with him.

The second character key development is Ian Donnelly. The key development in the first act of Ian Donnelly is trustworthy person he played an important role to supporting Dr. Louise Banks. A part that when Dr. Louise taking out her hazmat suite, he trusted her and took out his hazmat suite too. Secondly, the key development of Ian Donnelly in second act is the relationship with Dr. Louise Banks became closer.
He was trying his best to help Dr. Lousie to find the answer of the Heptapods’ language. The part that I most profound when Dr. Lousie woke up, and Ian told her he found an answer from the Heptapods’ language of alien. Dr. Louise was feel inspire and they hugging each other. Lastly, the key development in third act Ian falling in love with Dr. Louise. And the last part of the movie, Ian was telling Dr. Louise the thing surprised him the most it wasn’t meeting them, it was meeting her.

In a nutshell, the development was well explored and flow was well enough. But were there any issues not addressed by the end of the film? I will only agree in half. Because we will never know what will happen after the spaceship after leaving the earth. The result of the ending the already given the answer of the purpose aliens have a contradiction. They transferred the message to Dr. Louise help the world in after 3000 years, but we don’t really know she got spread to world.
